Questions and Answers

  • Who do you most admire in sailing?

My wife. No matter how uncomfortable she is doing something on the boat, she will always at least try.

  • What is your worst sailing memory?

    Any day with no wind.

  • In sailing, what do you most want to achieve?

    Just to seek adventure.

  • What, if anything, have you learned from your experiences sailing?

What I have learned more than anything is that we are no match against the awesome power of nature.

  • What is your favourite boat(s) and why?

In terms of cruising yachts, right now I am in love with the re-design of the Oyster line. On a smaller scale, I am a fan of the foiling moths, a dinghy that speeds along at nearly 30 kts. Sign me up!

  • What is your favourite sailing venue(s) and why?

If you can sail NY Harbor, you can sail anywhere. Try dealing with windshadows caused by the high-rises, the tidal current in the Hudson, the wicked eddies where the East River meets the Hudson, the water taxis, NY waterway ferries, mega-yachts coming in and out of North Cove, and, oh yeah, the constant comings and goings of barges, tugs and cruise ships. I am looking forward to sailing the BVI.

  • What is the longest passage you have done (without stops)?

Pelham Bay, New York to Three Mile Harbor in Easthampton, NY -- around 75-80 nautical miles.

  • What item of sailing kit could you not do without at sea?

    A decent book.

  • Who or what first introduced you to sailing?

I was first introduced to sailing when I was at summer camp in North Carolina. However, being the reckless kid that I was, I was more interested in powerboating. What an idiot I was. While studying for the New York Bar Examination, I just had an itch to really learn how to sail. I've been scratching that itch ever since.

  • Offshore or inshore and why?

Both, even though I've only sailed inshore.

  • What is your best sailing memory?

Exactly one year after I received my skipper's certification from the Manhattan Sailing Club, I was out on the harbor in a steady 15-20 kt. breeze. The beating was great...perfect chop...perfect spray. We flew the spinnaker...nearly broached on a beam reach to avoid a jackass in a Hunter or Catalina not observing the right away. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing. What more can you ask for on a sail?

  • What is the fastest you have sailed and on what boat was it?

    A whopping 7 kts. on a Beneateau 50.
