As the owner of Wizard of Aus I can say that the Mottle 33 design is a great little sailing boat that loves a breeze particularly downwind. The Mottle 33 was launched in 1975 in Australia as a fast family cruiser. About 110 were built and most would be still sailing today all round Australia. A particular feature of the boats is the large (by 1975 standards) aft cabin. Their long waterline and broad stern is typical of many modern boats today which explains their great downwind performance. Wher they differ from modern boat is that they are quite highly ballasted with encapsulated lead in their fin keels. Most have only moderate draft of around 1.55m which limits their upwind performance but which is more than adequate for most conditions. They are a relatively light displacement boat at 4.4t but have a reputation for great hull and deck strength, typical of GRP boatsof their era.
