I'm a sailing novice and will be sailing with the ARC in november. I live in cork, the boat I'm sailing on is in the UK. What is the best way for me to get experience here in Ireland and can you do the RYA competant crew here? And is it just plain stupid to do it when not experienced? Help!

the only thing i could think of doing is sail your boat out in the ocean and take as many short trips.

I'd suggest that you want to do the passages from the UK down to the Canary Islands before setting off on the ARC. That way you'll get experience on the boat and with some of the other crew members on shorter hops before the main event! Apart from that, just head to the nearest yacht club....

You could try taking some sailing lessons and crewing locally to build up your basic familiarity with a sailboat.
