Through Peter Duncan’s stunning photographs of this icon event and Tracey Johnstone’s words, four years of Etchells racing from the winters and World Championship in 2004 through to the 2008 winters, is captured in this limited edition coffee-table style book.

Etchells sailor and America’s Cup winning skipper John Bertrand AM in introducing the book typifies the spirit of the Etchells class and the Mooloolaba winter’s event.

‘The Etchells class offers the toughest one-design racing in the country, bar none. The best of the best compete in this class. Any higher and you enter the realms of the fully professional scene; the Olympics or the America’s Cup.

’I love all aspects of the Etchells. The camaraderie, the closeness of competition, the cut and thrust of high level tactics. One mistake and you’re a goner, it doesn’t get any better than that!

‘I’ve competed in the Mid-Winters since the early 90s and I enjoy coming back each year to Mooloolaba. The venue is unique; world-class. Racing conditions on the bay and on the ocean are second to none. Organisation of the regatta is world-class.

’The on-shore facilities in terms of restaurants and apartment accommodation is really a superb environment to hold a regatta. All of that combines to make the Mid-Winter championship a must attend regatta for the Etchells.

‘The Etchells class goes from strength to strength. The class and racing has never been stronger. The winning formula appears to be strict one-design rules and excellent organisation.

’The introduction of young people into the class through the new four-man teams has been a wonderful stimulus to the class and the racing with new ideas and new thinking. Combined with the comradeship amongst Australia’s finest yachtsmen and you have what now is really a unique event.

‘I forgot the weather! Beautiful one day. Superb the next.’

Etchells, capturing the spirit has recorded the highs and lows of each of the last four winter Etchells events, the winners, the fighters, the competitors, the volunteers and the magic of racing off Mooloolaba in warm winter breezes.

This is a book that can sit proudly on any sailor’s bookshelf to be enjoyed for years to come.

The full-colour photo book is now available for $50 and can be purchased by contacting Peter Duncan peter(at)questphoto.net or through Boat Books Australia.

Marzipan

MacGregor 28M

"Marzipan" a MacGregor 26M power sailing yacht is ideal for 2 couples or a family with 1 or 2 children. This boat offers motoring speeds of over 15 knots or relaxed exciting sailing speed exceeding 6 knots. For your comfort, this MacGregor 26 has a huge sun shade, cockpit cushions, transom fresh water shower with which you can rinse off as soon as you step out from the sea and much more. The boat's cabin features 1 double aft berth, a forward double V-berth, and 2 single berths, the dinette table is large and comfortable for four people, a galley including a 2 burner stove, mini fridge and sink, an enclosed head compartment featuring a toilet with holding tank. Experience the fun and adventure of sailing and power cruising for a full day at unbeatable value for money! A Day's Plan The general plan for your day's stay on board is that there is no plan! When you come onboard, everybody will sit around the chart and the skipper will inform you about the area and all the possible places to visit. After discussing everybody's preferences a general itinerary will be drawn. However our experience has shown that if wind is very light, ideally we motor to a beach or two and depending on wind conditions we sail back to our home port of Xemxija. But as we go along this may alter slightly, as you will get new ideas along the way! Normally, sometime around 10.00 am, and after a short discussion over the chart about where would be nice to go for a swim or snorkel, we set sail. Depending on sea conditions you will have a comfortable sail to a bay of your choice either towards the North West i.e. Mellieha, Comino or Gozo or towards the East i.e. Bahar ic-Caghaq or St. Julian's. After we drop anchor, you can stay onboard, go for a bit of swimming and snorkeling, or head for the shore. It is a heaven for kids as well, as they normally play for hours in the water, explore the sea life, or run around on the beach. This boat under motor is fast enough for water skiing; this is an other exciting option which is charged separately. Around 1 o'clock in the afternoon, lunch is served in the cockpit. Typical lunch onboard is either "Hobz biz-Zejt" (Maltese Bread with tuna, olives and mixed salad) or cold Tuna or Egg or Chicken salad and of course lunch is accompanied with wine or beer, water, soft drinks and fresh fruit as a desert* Tea and Coffee is also available. In late afternoon it's a good time to weigh anchor, hoist the sails and head for our home port of Xemxija We'll be there just before sunset around 6 or 7 o'clock which will give you plenty of time to disembark "Marzipan". www.yachtchartersmalta.info
