THE GREEN BLUE AND JEREMY ROGERS LTD LAUNCH THE GREENER CONTESSA 32 ‘CALYPSO’

September 10, 2010 20:46 by RYA | 0 comments

Today at the PSP Southampton Boat Show (Friday 10 September) marked the end of a challenging and remarkable nine month project as The Green Blue and Jeremy Rogers boat builders Ltd unveiled to the public Calypso, a new greener version of the Contessa 32.

Joined by supporters of the project and friends of The Green Blue the team behind this creative venture raised a glass to toast the boats maiden viewing.

“It all started as a small idea for a simple, green boat, but as more supporters got involved the project grew somewhat and took a more interesting and complex turn”, commented Kit Rogers, Jeremy Rogers Ltd.

Calypso has many fantastic and alternative green features including a hybrid diesel (25hp Betamarine) / electric engine and is made with truly sustainable alternative to teak decks called Kebony.

Boat building legend Jeremy Rogers said: “It’s a great relief to have completed the project and we appreciate all the help we’ve had throughout; from the likes of Harken, Garmin, The Green Blue amongst many others.

“It’s been a very interesting process and we’ve had lots of interest in the boat already. As for what happens next with Calypso we are doing further testing on the engine and trying to make her in to the ultimate green machine and educate other boat builders and users about making their boats greener. We also have plans to incorporate some of the environmentally friendly elements in to future boats that we build.”

The Calypso project, a collaborative journey between The Green Blue and Jeremy Rogers Ltd, provided a unique opportunity to build a bespoke yacht while exploring new products and technology to improve the environmental impact of the boat and the sailing experience.

Jane Swan, The Green Blue project manager commented: “It’s been a real privileged to share in Calypso’s journey. For The Green Blue it ramps up our efforts in promoting environmental awareness to consumers and boat builders alike, as we now have something tangible to showcase sustainability in action.

“To have had the chance to work with iconic boat builder Jeremy Rogers on this project has been priceless.”

You can see Calypso proudly exhibiting her green features throughout the PSP Southampton Boat Show in the marina berth M502.
