RYA LAUNCHES THE HUGELY POPULAR SAIL TRIM HANDBOOK FOR CRUISERS

September 12, 2010 21:57 by RYA | 0 comments

Today at the PSP Southampton Boat Show (Sunday 12 September) marked the official launch of one of the RYA’s newest publications, the Sail Trim Handbook for Cruisers.

Author Rob Gibson joined the RYA publications team and interested onlookers on the RYA stand to answer questions and sign copies of the new book.

BBC H2O Show’s Tracey Clarke asked Rob exactly why he decided to write the book. “I see many people out on the water who’ve spent money on their boats and sails but are not using them properly, so I wrote the book to share some of my top tips”, commented Rob.

There have been several books written about sail trimming for racers but this book focuses specifically on the cruising sailor. It’s equally as important for cruisers to trim their sails properly as Rob explained: “With properly trimmed sails you’ll sail more easily, it will be more comfortable and you’ll get to your destination (the pub!) quicker. So if you’re not going well – re-trim the sails.”

Rob also shared his top tips on reefing. “If you think about putting in a reef, do it immediately, however if you’re thinking about taking a reef out, have a cup of tea first before you decide.”

RYA Publications Manager Steen Ingerslev said: “We’re delighted that Rob could be here with us today to launch the book, which is already going like hot cakes. This book is in fact the fastest selling title in RYA history”, he told us, with currently just 27 copies left in the country!

“I’m delighted with how well the book is selling, it’s obviously something people want to read about”, concluded Rob.
Anyone buying the book could also be in with the chance of winning a fantastic competition; a one-day training course courtesy of Poole Sailing Ltd with Rob Gibson himself on an Elan 333.

The special one off training session will go hand in hand with all the advice and techniques Rob outlines in his new book.

All you need to do is purchase a copy of the new book and you’ll automatically be entered into the free prize draw.

RYA Sail Trim Handbook – for Cruisers is available through the RYA shop www.rya.org.uk/shop or pick up a copy at the PSP Southampton Boat Show for just £12.99.

Competition ends 31 October 2010.

Legolas

Beneteau Oceanis 343

An "Owners" layout, coded for 8 - Legolas is one of Flexisail's fleet of boats based in Lymington available for Sailing Membership, a fantastic alternative to Chartering. FlexiSail membership shares the time on a yacht between a small number of members (1 owner plus a maximum of 7 members). This gives each member the equivalent to 6.5 weeks or 46 days per year sailing, which is more than enough for most of us! In fact, our typical member actually only uses between 50-60% of their guaranteed time. Rather than us selling more memberships, this unused time sits in the calendar and is available to you as a member on a last minute basis (within 48 hours). This under usage allows members greater flexibility with their bookings making it easier to get the times they want. If you have previously chartered do you remember the anxiety beforehand not knowing quite what to expect on arrival and therefore what you need to bring with you? With FlexiSail you are a member on the one boat – one you are totally comfortable and familiar with and which is fully kitted out with everything that you will need right down to a corkscrew! FlexiSail is in fact the closest you can get to owning a boat. You know exactly what to bring each time (just your wet weather gear, food and drink, and bedding if overnighting), and you are safe in the knowledge that the boat will be clean, welcoming and ready to enjoy when you arrive. We have a substantial fleet of yachts ranging from 32 feet to 43 feet. Most are currently from the Beneteau Oceanis range and we are adding new boats into the programme all the time.
