Sorry!

You may have noticed that bang the corner has been a bit static of late!

The editor has been a bit busy;

Cork Week on Renaissance, stag week end in Dublin with some reprobates and a couple days racing on the magnificent, Magic Glove at Cowes week.

Full reports available in Yachts and Yachts Magazine and Afloat in Ireland.

Here’s the stuff in another format!

Craic Week

If you have never done Cork Week, well you have been missing out on a wonderful regatta. If you have been to the festival of sailing and worship of the black stuff then you may have a few stories….Glad to hear them!

Personally I was racing on John Bainbridge’s Farr 45 Renaissance and although we had a poor set of results we did have a great time. IRM was won by Jerry Otter’s Werewolf by a hair’s breadth from Shaun Frohlich’s Exabyte 4.

The racing in IRM was tight all week and in the early part of it, the Farr 40s were giving the Farr 45s a bit of a kicking but as soon a the breeze came in the ‘45s started to put in good results. There were many private battles going on all over the race course, some legal some not so legal and the protest room was kept quite busy. The nice thing about this fleet is that whilst the racing is no holes barred, the differences are left in the protest room and not taken to the bar.

On Renaissance we had few ups and downs but all in all it was a very happy crew able to laugh at some of the clangers. We did manage do beat Werewolf in a footy game with Audrey “gowan gowan” starring up front. The young guns on Werewolf deserved their victory sailing well all week and they were a pretty impressive unit in the beer tent as well. My thanks to John Bainbridge for a great week and to daughter Jo for taking on all the stress of organising it.

Also special mention for hippy-chick cook Emily, great food, naturally beautiful, a mixture of Italian and West Country, (I am not talking about the food!)

Personal thanks also to Eamon Rohan for the Blondie Party in Kinsale, great company, great food and a wonderful location.

Shaun Frohlich’s Stag do

Yes, not strictly a sailing topic but quite a few sailing psychopaths involved, Shaun’s timing was as appalling as usual; who it their right minds throws a stag weekend in Dublin, the week after Cork Week!

We had the blushing groom suitably “wheel barrow” drunk early on, probably something to do with the spirits in the first six pints of Guiness he put away but hey-ho, he got off pretty likely, although hair shaving or a full perm were considered. In the end we settled for changing the bride-to-be’s entry in his mobile, intercepting all text messages and responding with love and affection.

By Saturday only the hardcore were left and we proceeded on an all day drinking marathon and planned the evening ahead, we decided on a full out assault on Café en Seine in Dawson Street, three floors of lavish art deco with wall to wall crumpet, needless to say we all had aliases, “doctor Strangelove” a psychoanalyst for the evening was extremely happy in such a target rich environment and in tandem with Ozzie Rules Footy star “Troy Dart” proceeded to entrap two juicy blondes in the target zone known a the dance floor, apparently Dr. Strangelove escorted one of them back to her hostel but found that he could not get a clear shot at the target as there were four people in the room.

“Tonto Popadopolis, the Car Park magnate had a wonderful evening and at one point was surrounded by targets but being lurved up and fluffy, he was also just bait and never considered going “blue on blue.” I reckon it was more to do with the bio-hazard eminating from his trousers.

If you haven’t been to Café En Seine in Dublin….Go there. Highlights include a beautiful glass atrium with real 40ft trees, enormous glass lanterns, a Louis XIV bust, grand piano and a French Hotel lift running between the three floors of this spectacular bar.

Cowes Week-Magic Glove

Late call from Mike Broughton, it is a windy start to Cowes Week and my ample moveable ballast (fuelled by Craic Week and Dublin) are required on the rail of the mighty Magic Glove and also to turn the occasional handle.

In class Zero the PRO seems to think that we have been very naughty and keeps sending us to the corner…. of the Western Solent. My first day on the boat and for breakfast we had a 24 mile beat against tide in 20 knots of breeze all the way from the Squadron Line to the Needles Fairway buoy. Magic Glove is very impressive upwind, she has over five ton of lead in her keel and a trim tab but we were up against some stiff opposition; we managed to overhaul both of the Farr 52s (Bear and Chernikeeff and hang onto the coat tails of the two TP52s (Red and Panthera) but ABN AMRO ONE showed her amazing speed off the start line, smoking all of us by a good two knots of boat speed.

The upwind slog was pretty brutal, especially towards the end, under the Needles the wind was all over the place and out into the Channel we saw some pretty big swell as the south westerly let us have it with gust of over 30 knots. Colm Barrington had done a great job helming for over three hours in tough conditions and he handed over the helm to the highly experienced hands of Rob Greenhalgh. All of the crew were crammed into the back corner of the boat as we sent it down wave after wave, touching 22.8 knots, there was water everywhere.

The second day out and the crew was seriously ramped up with some serious rock stars on board Colm Barrington’s Magic Glove;

Eddie Warden-Owen
Chris Law
Jason Ker
Mike Broughton
Rob Greenhalgh
Peter Greenhalgh

Not to mention the real stars who had me in stiches when times got rough, Matt “I am a mouse-jockey” Curthoys, Nicki, Heinzy, Owen and Mama.

p.s. Mama, you may be quicker over the deck with a head start but don’t ever take me on in the snoring department!

More soon….
