The Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology set the scene as the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) today announced the finalized slate of events that in 2007 will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Club’s founding. With a well-deserved reputation for hospitality, skill in class organization and race management, YCCS will again welcome a number of high-profile events, including European and world championships, from May to October.
“We are delighted to have such a challenging and varied calendar in this, our 40th Anniversary year,” said YCCS Commodore Gianfranco Alberini. “The Club has strived from the outset to promote international sailing events in the Mediterranean and the calibre of our 2007 schedule reflects our achievements in these first 40 years. I just hope the next 40 years are every bit as enjoyable!”
The 2007 YCCS season starts with Rolex Capri Sailing Week, from May 15-19, which is organised in collaboration with Yacht Club Capri and staged from Capri’s Marina Grande. Participating classes include Farr 40 and Swan 45s, as well as the Mini-Maxi class, along with boats from the Comar Shipyard.
The action returns to YCCS in Porto Cervo with the Pantaenius Grand Soleil Cup from May 30-June 2. The third edition of this biennial regatta reunites the broad range of designs from the Cantiere del Pardo Shipyard in the waters off the Costa Smeralda.
The Rolex Settimana delle Bocche, June 4-9, will represent not only the second leg of the Farr 40 European Circuit but also the Rolex Farr 40 European Championship. The Settimana delle Bocche was the first international regatta organised by the YCCS (in 1972) and has been sponsored by Rolex since 2005.
The Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 is an inter-club event open to members of the Gstaad, Monaco, New York and Costa Smeralda Yacht Clubs as well as the Royal Yacht Squadron of Cowes. Scheduled from June 15-17, the event is raced in sloop-rigged Smeralda 888s – designed specifically for YCCS by German Frers – and will be sailed by teams of four in a fleet-race format.
During the traditional Italian holiday period of August, the YCCS collaborates in the organization of the Trofeo Formenton, which was first held in 1989. Scheduled for August 20 from Porto Rafael, the event includes cruiser-racers, lateen-rigged sailboats, J/24s, and the Smeralda 888s.
September will see the YCCS organisational skills put to the test with no less than five events. The month kicks off in grand style with the traditional Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, from September 2-8, which anticipates another record fleet of the world’s largest sailing yachts to assemble in Porto Cervo. A one-day series of IMA Match Races follows on September 9.
Many of the Maxi owners will remain in Porto Cervo in order to participate in the YCCS 40th Anniversary Regatta on September 10. Taking place in and around the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago, the regatta will see the 12 Metre Class joining a host of owners and boats who have featured prominently in the history of the YCCS. The celebrations will be completed with a spectacular crew party to be held on the Piazza Azzurra overlooking Porto Cervo Marina.
The Rolex Veteran Boat Rally, open to vintage and classic yachts, will provide stunning viewing for sailing enthusiasts from September 11-15 before sailors and spectators alike have a brief opportunity to recuperate before the start of another event sponsored by Rolex, which has supported YCCS events for more than 20 years. The Rolex TP52 Global Championship, from September 21-29, is the second global championship for the rapidly expanding TP52 fleet and competition is sure to be fierce.
The YCCS season will conclude with the Moby Mumm 30 World Championship, which takes place October 1-7 after two days of Pre-Worlds racing.
2007 will also be an important year for the YCCS Scuola della Vela (sailing school) as it joins the partnership of the Luna Rossa Sailing Schools whose goal is to allow as many people as possible, and in particular young people, to experience the thrill of sailing.
