The success of the online Green Directory that was launched in January by The Green Blue (the joint environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation (BMF) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA)) and Sailing Networks, (a social networking site for the sailing community), has prompted an expansion of its services. From today, the Green Directory expands to become the portal to a whole new series of environmental initiatives - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – all targeting the yachting and motor boating fraternity and the marine industry in general.
From today, the Green Directory expands to become the portal to a whole new series of environmental initiatives – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – all targeting the yachting and motor boating fraternity and the marine industry in general.
Sarah Black, Project Manager for The Green Blue, said: “The site is designed to provide solutions for people who want to make a difference. People were asking us for somewhere they could buy green products, and that is what the Directory does. Now we have identified a new need; people want to be able to make the most of what they have. Whether it is car sharing to get to a regatta or swapping unused bits of kit, the new website will be there to help.”
Reduce – This is a nifty car sharing scheme. Advertise your car space availability or lift requirements to get to sailing events and reap the environmental, social and financial benefits. This service can extend to any means of transport of people, of boats etc where space is up for grabs e.g. Trailer space, container space.
Reuse – Give away or exchange your unwanted sailing gear, boat bits etc and there’s no limit on size – go for smaller items such as fenders right up to old or unwanted boats. Simply put your details on the site and interested parties can contact you directly through the SNW internal messaging system.
There’s a ‘Wanted’ section too and it’s all good news for encouraging networking and engaging the community spirit.
Recycle – Aimed at the marine market to donate rather than dispose of their off-cuts and surplus product for another organisation to make use of e.g. A wetsuit company’s off-cuts of rubber, rope offcuts etc.
