In detail:
Nick Moloney and his BT Extreme 40 crew of Ed Walsh, Andrew Barney and Steve Mitchell kept their cool in tricky light conditions on Lake Lugano (Switzerland) to secure third place overall at the first iShares Cup event of 2008. Day 1 of the event delivered plenty of drama with a capsize for America’s Cup defenders Alinghi, first-timers in the iShares Cup, that resulted in a broken rig. Double Olympic medallist Shirley Robertson, the only female competing in the event, got on a roll and won the event overall.
From Nick:
We all come together and we’ve got that feeling of relief that we can do it as a group. I think the competition was good, no one was crazily ahead – JPMorgan had an amazing event, for sure, but they have chinks in their armour as well. I think it would have been disappointing for us if Alinghi had come here and just taken a row of firsts, and we would have all looked back on last year and gone ‘what were we doing’! But for them to arrive at the top of their game and not have it all their own way made us feel like we have some credit here and the levels high and its going to be hard for anyone to win. We’ve got a team so desperate to do well for their own personal reasons it’s just fire.!
From Ed:
I think just on the basis of the amount of sailing we’ve done that has just capped over seven days so it’s nice after only a week’s sailing, and Alinghi have been two-boat tuning for ages, to be in the mix here. Got a few things we can go away and work on for sure and it will be interesting to see how we fair in slightly windier races but some big positives we can draw on from the weekend.
From Steve:
I think the main thing for us was that we put together a team and we’re competitive, we’re up there and to come to the first regatta and come third on the podium is just great. It’s probably our aim for the first regatta and we know can build on that. The thing is the teams are very good, they are full of champions so it’s not going to be an easy ride for anybody.
From Andrew:
It was such an extreme light wind event – it was really hard for us to quickly find our feet but I think we just got better and better as the event wore on. The promising thing is that every time we came out with good points from the debrief the previous day we were able to implement that and we were getting pretty good towards the end. We just wanted more races really! But basically we’re delighted to be on the podium.
