Johnny Hutchcroft (GBR) crossed the finish line in Lindau shortly after midnight this weekend with his team on the fast catamaran “Holmatro”. In just 4 hours, 41 minutes and 37 seconds, Hutchcroft set a new ‘Rund Um’ record with his 4-man team on a course of almost 100 kilometres. Another record is the fact that the last of 2500 participants crossed the line back in Lindau at 13.36, the next afternoon. The record was beaten by 35 minutes. Previous record was held by the Principessa (Libera class).

Of the 487 yachts in the race, a great number retired shortly after the start at 19.30, because of broken masts and some other serious problems. Many participants had not expected the weather would be so strong and were surprised by strong wind. Favorite Fritz Trippolt also had to abandon their race with their Liberas ‘BTV” as the skipper of the ‘Princess’. Also Luke Hummler, on board one of the two America’s Cup yachts, had some problems before the start. With the 23 meter long ship, he crossed the starting line last but ultimately got into 5th place. Extreme 40 / Team Holmatro (Hutchcroft) and Exteme 40 / Team Volvo Ocean Race (Loos) worked hard to keep ahead of each other and the rest of the fleet in the dark. After a gybing dual Holmatro took the advantage and finished ahead of Team Volvo Ocean Race by just a minute.
As Hutchcroft said: “I’ll be back!” (next year)
