SEA-TV has just released a new 25th Anniversary Edition DVD of their documentary titled, America’s Cup 1983. The documentary includes a never-before-seen, exclusive interview with John Bertrand the skipper of the victorious Australia II.
Australia II skippered by John Bertrand beat Dennis Conner’s Liberty to end the 132-year domination of the America’s Cup by the New York Yacht Club – breaking the longest winning streak in sports history.
“ This is the America’s Cup that changed everything,” exclaims SEA-TV president, Chip Croft. “It was the greatest sailing event of the 20th Century. In this production we give you a unique view of the great race unlike typical network television coverage. You’ll see Newport and the Aussie victory shot before the big networks dominated the Cup rights.
The documentary opens with a quick tour of Newport, a city with more historic firsts than any other in the US, such as the first casino, the first library, etc. The 12 meter yachts are explained and then the key players leading up to the incredible final race. The big build-up begins when Conner’s Liberty is selected by the NY Yacht Club to defend the Cup over Ted Turner’s old Courageous, skippered by John Kolius. Thousands invade Newport as the final race between Liberty and Australia II shapes up to be the race of the century. Then the camera moves in with hundreds of boats for the most dramatic close-up ever of the congratulations and celebration on the water minutes after Bertrand and crew cross the finish line into history.
“This is a unique inside view of the great race,” says Croft. “As a bonus, we also include a never-before-seen exclusive interview with John Bertrand the skipper of the victorious Australia II and author of the book Born To Win. John talks about what it took to win the Cup under tremendous pressure, the winged keel, the psychology of winning in sports and in life and much more! This is a fabulous, inspiring interview that is great for veteran racers as well as youth who want to go for greatness.”
The America’s Cup 1983 runs 73 minutes and is priced at $29.95US. It may be obtained through their web site at www.sea-tvproductions.com
