Bahrain Team Pindar skipper Ian Williams, got off to a solid start to the season yesterday, securing his place in the quarter-finals of the Marseille International Match Race in France, the first event on the 2009 World Match Racing Tour.
Reigning Double World Match Racing Champion, Williams and his crew finished fourth in the round-robin phase after a competitive day’s racing, in strong winds, at the Yachting Club de la Pointe Rouge (YCPR) in Marseille.
American Ed Baird (Alinghi) and his America’s Cup winning crew topped the standings by just one point on 8 wins, followed by Paolo Cian (Team Shosholoza) and by Damien Iehl (French Match Racing Team), who each won 7.
Williams will now meet Torvar Mirsky (AUS) and his Mirsky Racing Team, who they defeated in the round-robin stages, in a first-to-three duel, to secure a place in the semi-finals.
