Do you know someone who could sail The Long Way Up?
Published 16:04 on 10 Mar 2020
Sailing charity Turn to Starboard is seeking twenty-four, forces' veterans to take part in the nautical adventure of a lifetime! The Long Way Up challenge offers wounded, injured or traumatised servicemen and women the chance to join one of three 40-foot yachts sailing the length of Britain, from Land's End to John O'Groats and back.
A minimum of one week's previous yacht sailing experience is required, and successful applicants will then receive expert tuition from an experienced RYA Yachtmaster Offshore skipper. Setting sail from Land's End on June 10, 2020, crew members will spend around three weeks sailing up the western coast of mainland Britain, taking in some spectacular scenery, honing their navigation skills, and gaining valuable offshore sailing experience (which can be put towards an RYA Yachtmaster qualification). The three yachts should reach the finish line in Scotland around June 25-27th, and the voyage south will depart John O'Groats on June 29th, arriving back in Cornwall on July 17th; participants can choose which leg of the journey they undertake.
The aim of the epic voyage is to help veterans experience freedom on the water, meet people facing similar challenges as their own, enjoy great camaraderie and gain valuable skills that apply to everyday life.
Twenty four places are available - all provided free of charge and including three meals a day, a single bed on board and the loan of waterproof kit and a safety lifejacket.
