WANTED sailing buddy/crew or buddies.
Do you fancy an adventure as opposed to day sails and short trips? Crewing for me maybe what you are looking for if you like fair weather sailing in a warmer climate, as my yacht is based in Portugal and I cruise from the Algarve to the Balearics and back most summers. For most of the last 8 years I have been completing this trip single handed 95% of the time, but I am now looking for crew to assist me particularly on the outward and return cruises.
My yacht is a 12 metre Dufour 39 GF Design cruiser/racer that I have converted to a well maintained and fully equipped Mediterranean live aboard, it has an Axiom chart plotter, WiFi – AIS which links to chart plotter and I Pads, EPIRB, Liferaft, heating, fridge, heavy duty Anchor and electric winch, Rib, davits, solar panels etc etc.
Layout is 2 cabins with 2 heads both with hot/cold water and showers, with up to 7 berths but would only ever have a maximum of 3 to 4 on board.
Planned itinerary for 2023 is leave Algarve in May for a 2/3 weeks cruise to the Balearics, cruise around the Balearics until Mid August, then a 2/3 week cruise back to Portugal, I then cruise around the Algarve until lift out onto the hard in October. I am a retired mechanical engineer and have Portuguese residency so I am not limited by the 90 days in any 180 Schengen rules, which will apply to UK residents.
My yacht is based near Faro in Portugal and is a 15 euro taxi ride from the airport, flights to Faro from most UK airports are readily available and can be as cheap as £25 or less, you can normally also fly quite cheaply from Palma back to the UK.
What I need in a buddy/crew is someone who is able to come for a flexible period of time, and not be limited to set start and finish dates as my plans are always totally flexible and dependent on fair weather, routing, etc.
Ideally you will be qualified and experienced enough to stand a night watch if required, and know when to call the skipper, generally understand sailing rules/lights/navigation/weather/AIS and how to sail and operate an autopilot competently.
You need to be relatively fit with no severe medical conditions, limitations, and able to look after yourself, and other members of the crew and the boat if it gets a bit rough.
Ideally we would meet up beforehand to ensure that we are compatible and can get along with each other, I think I am fairly easy to get on with, a non smoker, drink wine and like cooking standard food.
Before acquiring my own yacht I qualified to coastal yacht master and crewed on numerous yachts including a two man round UK trip, and a Biscay crossing, with various skippers many of whom are still good friends and could provide references if needed.
We would share expenses for, Food, Drink,Marina fees, Diesel,Gas etc. although wherever possible I prefer to anchor to save marina fees which can be very expensive in the Balearics.(on my previous trips I have never stayed in a marina in the Balearics)
I am currently at home in South Yorkshire until March.
If you are interested in this sort of trip please PM me.
