For the past two summers, we’ve sailed to Brittany and taken Exeat down the French coast from Roscoff to La Rochelle and its nearby islands of Île de Re and Île d’Oléron. I could happily repeat this journey every year ad infinitum – and no doubt we’ll end up in La Rochelle again at some point this year. But with a limited window before we have to return to the UK for family commitments, we decided to start our French exodus with exploring a different region of our closest European neighbour: Normandy.
Last year, we found out the hard way that sailing from Europe to the Channel Islands is nigh impossible with a dog, so we thought we’d call in on the CI before heading on to France. We were particularly keen to revisit Alderney, and as it’s the nearest Channel Island to the UK, this would be our first port of call.
With friends joining us for the Channel crossing, we sailed from the Isle of Wight to Studland Bay, waiting in this lovely anchorage until early evening so we could nip briefly into Poole harbour and pick up our crew. We then planned to return to Studland to stay overnight, ready for a dawn dash to Alderney the following morning.

21 Apr 2024 New log entry: Home again ↙ Report?
- Boat Exeat

- Route Wicor Marine Yacht Haven ··· Cowes
The following morning, after a slap-up breakfast at the superlative shoreside Salt cafe, we sailed back to Cowes to take Exeat into Shephard’s Wharf marina. She was booked in with Solent Sails to have a cockpit enclosure made, and we’d all been waiting for a break in the relentless rain before they could get started with shaping and fitting the new canvas. They’d already made us a smart new sprayhood (the old one was ancient, mouldy, and falling off!) and the plan for cockpit covers was to add zips to the existing bimini so additional fabric could be attached to the back and sides.
It sounds like something of a luxury, but being able to contain the cockpit in inclement weather would instantly give us an additional “room” on board when we had a boatful of friends or children or children’s friends. And new cockpit covers are certainly cheaper than a bigger boat! Plus, with the temperature being decidedly cooler than average for this time of year, the enclosure would be extremely welcome until the weather warms up a bit.
